I've made a little game (in a game jam)!

Hello!

I'm trying to write more on this blog, so what's better than to show the little game I made this last weekend with other three people!

To be more precise, I've participated for the second time in the MalagaJam, with over 300 people.

For a bit of context if you don't know what a game jam is, it's an event where people create a game in a specific amount of time (48 hours, 1 week…). There's usually a theme for the games that it's known at the beginning of the event. It can be anything, from a phrase to a simple word.

Last year, I went with a friend, and I was decided to develop something using Löve2D. However, we decided to search for more members of the team and ended up with two more programmers who knew Unity better. Long story short, I ended up learning a bit of Unity and making a game about a germ who “fights” against different kind of bubbles.

So… this year, I decided to learn Godot beforehand to have more opportunities to collaborate with people. And it worked somehow. I mean, this time I went with three more people, and we did not have the need to “recruit” more people into the team.

The theme was “mask”, and I think it was an amazing theme for a game jam (last year was “bubble”). But due to the limited time we had (and the inexperience with the engine), we had to discard a lot of incredible ideas. We finally chose to make a game similar to Plants Vs Zombies where you summon something like the kologs (from TLOZ: Breath of the Wild) but for each element.

At some points while developing this game, my perfectionism was shouting at me because we couldn't balance the game, even a little. So everything you see (or play, if you want!) it's very rough. However, it's good to have something “finished” in that short amount of time.

One of my objectives with going to events like this is to try to know people who have similar hobbies than mine. However, I ended up so focused on developing the game that I ended up very drained at the end of the day. And even when I tried to talk to people, it was hard because everyone was focused on other things.

I had a great time at this event, and I like everything related to game jams. If only my perfectionism allowed me to participate in more…

But hey! Play this little game, you can even play it in your smartphone!

PD: The post was a little chaotic, but I'm trying to write and post, to avoid delaying publishing this for months. If you read up to this point, thank you!
